Today’s What’s Working Now Interview is with the innovator behind VIP Days… million dollar mentor David Neagle.
BVB: It seems almost outrageous that people can spend an entire afternoon one-on-one with you. How did you come up with this model, and why is it working for you?
David: In 2008 when the economy crashed, it started to affect the personal development industry a little bit. So we began experimenting with some ideas.
VIP Days are one of those ideas, and they are like bread and butter in our company. They work so well for us… the margins are absolutely fantastic, because they are low-cost compared to other things we could be doing.
BVB: Why is it working now?
David: That’s simple. First of all, I want to say that every year they work better than the year before. We developed it back then because people wanted the most for their money. And they still do.
People will spend a lot of money to do a VIP Day because they feel they are getting more personal work, more one-on-one time with me and my team, they feel like it was better value for their dollar.
BVB: I can see that it would be valuable, but David, show us the money!
David: Let me just give you an idea of what we’ve got this year for VIP Days. We’ve got 72 VIP Days currently sold at $20,000. So the gross revenue on that is $1,440,000 just from VIP days alone.
And also, we started teaching it to all of our clients. I can tell you, they are all making a lot of money from this strategy, they love VIP Days.
In terms of business growth for my clients, I have been working with one woman for three years. This year she’s on track to make $5,000,000.
BVB: What does it look like to put one on?
David: When we first started doing them we structured them at about 8 hours. It was a long day. And we realized very quickly, that after 4 hours they could not take anything more in. We could keep going for 10, but they couldn’t do it.
So now, we do them from 10-2 with a working lunch. And they get a 22-page questionnaire before they come in. The questions are about them, where they want to go, what their goals are.
Anyone can create a questionnaire like that. So that’s where you would start. And then we go over that as a team. When they show up, we create systems and processes in order for them to hit their objectives.
We have people dealing with the marketing, the coaching, and even taking notes during the sessions.
BVB: Do you have anything in place to help them “do the work” once they leave?
David: They get a template of the whole day, and what their action steps are when they leave. So there’s no question as to what they have to do.
Then they get two follow up calls with me, two follow up calls with my assistant coach afterwards, and if they want to extend that we have micro-packages where the person gets 6 more calls.
Once they hit their goal, we bring them in for another VIP Day.
BVB: A lot of people would say “I couldn’t charge $10,000, $20,000 for a VIP Day.” What do you say to that?
So I ask them, how much do you feel comfortable charging for a VIP Day? And they’ll shoot me a number.
And I’ll say, ok, now based on what you see in your mind how far can you stretch that number? What is the maximum you can see yourself charging? And we’ll go with that. Because that’s the edge of their growth.
We have people charging the same amount as me, or just a few thousand dollars. The point is, they’re making money, they’re building their confidence, their businesses are growing.
BVB: David what have been some of your challenges in attaining such high-level success?
David: From a strategic standpoint, I am not a marketer. I can do marketing well, but I’m not a marketer. I’m a salesman.
I was taught by some of the best sales people in the industry, I’m a salesperson, and I’m a great teacher.
So my challenge in my own business is to stay abreast of what’s going on with marketing. What’s going on with it, how is it working, what are the rhythms of it, what are the technologies. Facebook, Pay Per Click stuff, what’s actually working? We want to keep filtering people in.
BVB: David what can our tribe implement today to create success with this strategy?
David: Thats a great question. A lot of people get into this industry and they see people making huge numbers. And they become the deer in headlights with those numbers.
I would suggest that they stop focusing on the numbers and start looking at margins in their business. Because margins are everything.
These events are so LOW COST to put on, and the value is tremendous. And, there are so many other types of impactful live events you can put on. Start where you are, and work your way up.
