While everyone is setting goals today, we’re not!

It’s really liberating actually.

In today’s episode I’m going to tell you why it’s definitely not a good idea to set goals – nope, no setting goals this year.
Hi there, Max Simon here, and welcome to The Big Vision Show. This is all about how you can reach more people and thrive financially.
Now it’s that time of year where everybody’s going to be telling you to set goals, and set bigger goals, and dream big. And I’m here to tell you don’t do any of that. Now, I want you to dream big and all but here’s the thing: most people set goals based upon activities that are kind of important to them but are really more like one-off things, like “I want to make $100,000” or “I want to lose a bunch of weight,” or “I want to achieve this thing.”
But the problem is, most of those goals are disconnected from what’s most meaningful for you, what’s most alive for you. What’s the bigger vision of who you want to be in the world? That’s why here at Big Vision Business we don’t want you to set goals. We want you to get a clear vision of who you want to be in the world.
For example, my top five goals are: consciousness, taking great care of myself, love, impact, and creativity in the world. And I know that because I know those values so clearly inside of myself, every activity, every goal, every step I take has to have a meaningful connection back to the person I most want to be in the world.
And when you start with that foundation of who do you most want to be, what’s the vision for yourself and your business that you want to create in the world, then the goals or activities that you layer on top of that are likely to have a much more deep, meaningful, and powerful fuel to keep you on track and moving forward.
So today, let’s define what’s most meaningful for you. Let’s help you clarify what are your core values so that you can layer activities on top of it that you’re likely to actually succeed on.
The first step is really to take a step back from yourself and ask “What are the qualities that are most important to me?” It might be family, it might be freedom, it might be consciousness – any of the things that are most relevant to you, just list them all out. You’ll probably have 15 or 20 if you really get honest.
Step number two is also to look at the people that you respect and admire. What are the qualities in them that really inspire you? Who do you follow? Who do you love and what is it about them that you appreciate the most? Write those down as well so that you have that to add to your list.
From there, take that whole giant list of qualities that inspire you and narrow it down to five. And it’s very simple – just say “If I had to choose one or the other which one would I choose? A or B?” And then once you pick A go A to C, “Which one would I rather have?” and then “Which one would I rather have?” and then A to D. And you just keep narrowing it down until you have just five.
And the fourth step is to take this list of values and determine what your life and business would look like if you were living it to the fullest. For example, consciousness is one of mine and so I’m always very conscious of what I’m saying to you, how I’m presenting myself – that I’m really doing it in integrity and that I’m conscious of the videos I make.
When you take this approach to setting goals, if you will, each day becomes an opportunity to live your values to the fullest, to really represent the person you want to be. And that will be much more meaningful and much better fuel for you to achieve your goals and your desires in the world.
So do you know what would be a great exercise? I’d love to hear what your top values are. Post a comment below with what are your top five. As well, I’d love to hear of what are some activities that this could look like for you in your business – what would this shift in you if you were day in and day out living your values in your business?

love it!
Love the shift of paradigm Max. Running after goal of having and doing are too often just a manifestation of our inner dialogue with ourselves “when I will have such and such, then I will be successful, powerful, loved, . . ” intrinsically telling myself than i am not all of those.
The vision and principle I hold for my life is being conscious, compassionate, trusting and truthful. In this regard i love the article by Dr. David Wolf that help recognizing what is our life paradigm http://www.satvatove.com/personal-development/be-do-have/
Too often I am in the Do Have Be paradigm, convinced that if I work very hard toward my goal i will finally get the life experience I want. This doesn’t work. It is just faulty logic and burn like fire.
It’s so easy to get caught up in it all. but it never takes you anywhere. definitely time for us to SHIFT and be more. thanks for sharing!! much love, max
I like what you say here, because it unites who we are with what the world needs from us. We come into the world oriented naturally to certain activities, but we can be separated from ourselves and get lost in inauthenticity. No intention can work by will alone, it needs genuine passion, which is pretty much a given of who we are.
You’ve nailed it Max, and I salute you.
very smart… who we are with what the world needs. perfect articulation!! thanks for sharing… much love, max
Max, Max, Max — the scene behind you is not cold. The scene out my window of snow falling on ice and snow, that is cold
The rest of the message dead on! I agree fully that people should look instead for their inner guiding principle and lights; follow those and the goals fall into place as do the successes. Not all simple simon, yes there are still things that happen ..but you feel and know you are on the right path. I use the guiding principle of Lived, Loved, Learned and Legacy .. what do you want to be known for in those areas.
Happy 2013 to you and yours!
t
haha… all perspective. i sure felt cold! happy new year Theresa!!
GREAT ADVICE! Last year, I found that when I was in tune with my core values, I found myself achieving things I would have never attempted. However, I was very successful and most importantly effective!
so true, and so important. thanks for sharing Shalena!!
Thanks for the adjustment Max. I also like the comment above about shifting from do/have/be to BE/do/have.
My top values are to (1) BE at the highest vibration possible in as many areas as I can possibly imagine (another way of saying… being conscious), (2) BE more open hearted, (3) BE more vulnerably authentic, (4) BE more aligned…with myself, clients, my life purpose, and (5) BE an explorer…I’m always looking for new, fun things to add to life’s adventure.
Outstanding and succinct advice Max. Many thanks, have a great year. Colin
“Values shape our lives, our relationships, our attitude, our beliefs, our behaviors, our actions and the choices we make. Core values are one of the bases for creating a successful life.” Moira Sutton ’8 Keys to Unlocking Infinite Passion’ ~ Max I love your videos and your message(s). My top five core values are love, compassion, creativity, adventure and nature. I had a hard time narrowing the list down ~ so I have a longer list. Namaste…
Thanks – this is a great way to set the energy for 2013!!!
Happy New Year Max and the whole Big Vision Team…here goes…

Dear Max,
This is a diversion from the norm. I will try this and see whether it takes me in the desired direction. Thanks
Margaret
Really appropriate insight for these times. You talked way more slowly. Was that intentional, or was it THAT cold? I worried, haha. Love you and what you ARE on this planet and in this time!
So true! My top values are family, faith, health, security and zest for life. Thanks!
These steps are so important in getting clear on your own personal definition of success so that you can stay true to yourself when building your business!!
Max, Just shared this with all my friends.. a great reminder… !! thanks. Liam Stone

Dear Max,
)
Once again, you have touched the perfect chord. Thank you and thanks to everyone who has shared their values for the year. may we all realize we are guided by our intentions all the time and they are reflections of our soul.
I loved doing this process because I so appreciated the permission to pay this concrete kind of attention to myself and to listen more deeply. Here is my list with some questions I will be asking to put them in the forefront of my choices this year :
1. Presence (Am I listening wholeheartedly and openly allowing what is/What Is?)
2. Flow (Am I fully giving and receiving equally with open hands and heart?)
3. Health: (Is this fully aligned with my optimal physical well-being?)
4. Power: (Am I making the most impactful choices I can right now?)
5. Trust: (Can I love myself enough to “not do it “right” and keep on moving?
6.Abundance: (Am I living the most delicious life, full of beauty, joy, adventures, experience, love, laughter, and surprises?)
7. Lightheartedness: (Am I being light about this whole game? Am I remembering it is a story I am making up. How de-lightful can I make it? This is especially brought to mind when you include the “out-takes” Max. I cannot tell you how much I love them! Or including your mom. The heavens rejoice at your insistence on showing up more and more as who you are and bringing some humor (light) into this subject we take so seriously. We are meant to take it seriously (with passion) but that doesn’t mean we have to be grim. Bessings, blessings for cracking that pot.
Much love,
Ahulani
thanks max.. it is so nice to connect with people who think and confirm what you believe.. i have long been confirming to clients.. no goals!!.. they tend always to be of a material gain, or of something that is never sustaining to their cause.. like i want to lose weight.. as opposed to ..i want to be the best i can be.. and allowing that to become… so i sit with mine.. and trust that should i be this best as me.. all will follow… heal, serve, love, impact and create…. with love to you and yours from downunder… x
Max,
You are one of the people I admire most. I am not a business person but I love your messages for their evolutionary value. My top five values are Consciousness, Integrity, Self-Responsibility, Honesty and Humor. Thanks for this post, it is most excellent!
