Transcript of this episode:
Hey there, it’s Max Simon and in this episode of The Big Vision Show, we’re going to talk about how to get comfortable in uncomfortable situations.
My name is Max Simon and we’re going to start doing The Big Vision Show a little differently from now on, so that we can get more of them out. Because the truth is, the way we were doing them in the past, as much fun as they were, were a huge production.
I mean like a director, and an editor, and somebody to try to make me look better—which wasn’t very easy—and all this other stuff. So, we’re going to keep these things a little bit cleaner and to the point now so that we can make sure that all of our knowledge and wisdom is getting out to you in the quickest possible way.
So today, we’re going to talk about getting uncomfortable. Because, here’s the thing, it’s a good time of year to talk about doing new things, right? It’s like, everybody wants to have a new resolution, everyone wants to make a new life—they want to do something new.
Well, I went to yoga this morning and I hadn’t been in about a week and a half or so, and I don’t know about you, but I’m the kind of person that, if I’m not constantly moving my body, I literally tighten up, like overnight.
And so, this whole damn class was uncomfortable for me. From the moment I got there and tried to touch my toes and breathe and all that, the whole class was totally uncomfortable.
And it got me thinking about how easy it is for us to want to stop or…stop, actually that’s it. We want to stop doing the things that are uncomfortable to us, even if it’s actually leading us in the direction of what we really want most. Right?
Because, and here’s the reason, when you start doing something that you haven’t done before, whether it’s physical, or mental, or financial, the truth is that it’s going to be uncomfortable. You’re going to start having to do things that you’re not used to and any time you’re not used to doing something, you get uncomfortable.
In this case, I was physically uncomfortable. But, it’s so important in those times to do a few specific things. So first, you want to focus on why you made the decision. Why did you make the decision to show up and do this thing?
So, in my case, I knew that if I just stayed in it—stayed in the class—then by the end, my body would feel open again and I would feel much more alive. So you have to remind yourself of the decision that brought you to that place.
The second thing is to remember that if you are miserable throughout the entire process, that doesn’t do any good either. So you have to continue to look for the ways that you can shape an attitude or a perspective that really does support you in that process, because that will not only make it more successful, but it will also make it more enjoyable for you and everybody else around you.
So in my case, I just kept reminding myself that if I stayed in it, within a short amount of time, I would start to feel better and my body would open up, and sure enough, as I stayed focused on that point rather than how tight I was, it got better quickly.
And the third thing is to remind yourself to keep showing up no matter what. You see, it’s very easy when you get out of bed in the morning, or when you’re taking that step forward, to psych yourself out—to tell yourself all the reasons why you can’t or you’re too tired or whatever else.
And at that point you have to remind yourself of the commitment that you’ve already made. And then just take those steps forward, because once you get into motion, it becomes a whole lot easier.
So, that’s it for today’s Big Vision Show. And here’s the question of the day: What is it that you are going to do that ‘s uncomfortable today? Or this week? What are you going to do that’s uncomfortable, even though you know it’s what you want to be doing to move yourself forward?
So, leave your question or your comment right below and if you liked this show, please share it with all your friends on the interwebs and I will see you soon in the next episode of The Big Vision Show. Much love.
