Here’s the deal tribe. We ALL have a story. We are all way more incredible than we believe. And every single one of us has something powerful to contribute.
This is the secret to success in any business endeavor, any marketing strategy.
Your personal story is your plan, it’s your vision. It’s who you are, and everything you can be…
The trouble is, many of us simply don’t realize how powerful our stories are…
Read on to learn how one man used these simple techniques to rise to the top of two very different fields, and how you can do it too…
Introducing former NFL top safety & Broadway writer and actor Bo Eason… Bo is more than generous in helping you materialize your Big Vision…
BVB: Bo, tell me… what’s working for you now?
Bo: What’s working for me is storytelling.
Here’s an example. I played professional football, and when I was a kid, I had this dream. So I made a 20 year plan. Im 51 now and I still have the piece of paper.
I wanted to be the best safety in the world. It was very specific. I drew a picture of myself 20 years in the future, and from then on, I just followed that plan. It got more detailed, and became a story.
I was just making up my life. I decided I had to run backwards faster than the fastest man could run forwards. That was part of the story too. I was creating my life and actually living it in the physical world.
After those 20 years passed, I was the first safety chosen in the 1984 NFL Draft.
So that dream came true.
But I was being the best safety way before they said I was the best safety.
BVB: Maybe you were just born to be a football player though… tell me another story Bo so I’m convinced. We only want to give our readers the best, after all!
Bo: Eventually it was time to move on from football, so I created a new story. A new plan. I decided to make a living on stage expressing myself verbally and physically so I could inspire people the way I did on a field.
So I moved to New York City, I took performance classes. And I asked everyone who is the best stage performer of our time? And everyone said Al Pacino.
So I said, where is he?
If he is the best, then I have got to talk to him.
They all said you can’t talk to Al, he’s a movie star.
BVB: Really Bo, you were just going to go out there and find Al?
Bo: Within three days I was at his house.
I said “Everyone says you are the best stage performer of our time, how do you do it? What do I have to do it?”
And he told me. He told me in 3 hours, what to do in 15 years. I said thanks Al, and I went and did it.
And 15 years later my play “Runt of the Litter” opened on Broadway. And there I was on stage, performing for the New York critics, and I look, and I make eye contact with Al Pacino. He was in the front row. I hadn’t seen him in 15 years and now we’re looking eye to eye. He gives me a little nod and a grin.
Well then Leonardo DiCaprio and Toby Maguire came to my play, and wanted to turn it into a film. And I had no writing capabilities or qualifications really.
But I lived my story. And they could see me putting my heart on the line.
BVB: That’s a pretty far out story. And I get you were VERY successful from following your own story… but… how can other people do this?
Bo: You have to get your mindset right. You have to surrender to your own story. Most people think their story isn’t important or won’t impact others. Your life seems boring or mundane to you because it’s taken years to live it.
The key to the kingdom for all of us is our personal story.
The miles we’ve run in our lifetime. That’s the most valuable asset we have, and it’s the first thing you and I will undervalue.
BVB: That makes sense, what are the concrete steps though?
Bo: You have to do three things with your personal story. These are the three most critical steps that if everyone would follow, your business would go through the roof.
You would become the go-to person for your business, I don’t care what business you are in.
You want your audience to be thinking about their own life, relating your story to their life. Most people will make their story too general.
Second, you have to physicalize your story. This is a lost art. The information age has turned us very sedentary, talking on these tiny phones, tiny screens, in tiny cubicles.
BVB: Not nearly as exciting as running around on a football field!
Bo: Exactly. You have to embody your story. So it’s embedded in all your molecules. I want those cells communicating your story 24 hours a day.
I’ve been trained to do it. If you want to perform at a high level, if you want to be a leader, if you want to impact the people who are listening to you, you have to be physical with them going forward.
We don’t trust politicians because we don’t see their bodies, they’re little talking heads on a screen. The body doesn’t lie. It’s expressive.
Think about a figure skater, their body is pure, full expression. You and me, we can’t take our eyes off of that. Tell your story like that.
BVB: Even if you are a Facebook marketer, or a life coach? This applies?
Bo: This applies to any field, it’s so crucial.
And thirdly, you have to be generous with the telling of your personal story. I want my storytellers, the entrepreneurs, and the CEOs of businesses, to give more of themselves than anyone else is willing to give. When you do that, you get to make the most money, have the most influence, and create the most impact.
BVB: Why is this a strategy that is working now?
Bo: It’s probably always going to work. And let me tell you why. If people would do this, they would learn that they have to make the most money. Because they are the most attractive.
Because human nature is attracted to somebody who gives the most of themselves. It’s just how things work. If you can attach a story to your dream and live it, you will live the life of your dreams.
Now thats a cool life to live.
We all want to be magnetic. My favorite definition of magnetism is that we have the power to affect others with the delight we take with ourselves.
It’s not that I have the best story. It’s that I love my story more than you love yours! And I’m more generous with the expression of it.
Tell it with all the zest you have. People will follow you, give you the chance to lead, pay you money.
BVB: Bo I think our readers are going to be pretty excited about all of this. Can you give me one final piece of advice that they can apply right now, no matter what they are doing in their business?
Bo: All roads lead to your personal story.
If you have the ability to lay that down, in a book, or verbally, or in the brand of your company, and you can express it physically, you are going to get all the business you can muster, and attract all the business you could ever want to.
You will lift your head, and you will be surrounded with those you respect.
Keep playing, keep participating… get hurt, get your heartbroken because you are out there playing so hard.
You will be wise, you will be a leader, because you participated the most.
BVB: Thanks for your time Bo, it was very inspiring!
